How to make your own latex leggings

latex leggingsThey are shiny, they look great and high fashion at the moment, latex leggings!

Learn how to make our own latex leggings in this tutorial. Just follow eleven easy steps. Comments and questions are appreciated!

Lets get started!

1. Make the pattern

Make a sketch of your new project. It will help you to keep an overview of which measurements you need and how the pattern should look like in the end.

2. Take measurements

We need the waist, hip and leg for the latex leggings. Check out here how to take the measurements and which ones you need from the leg.

3. Transfer pattern to paper

latex leggingSee here what the latex-leggings pattern should look like. It doesn’t matter what kind of paper you use, but I usually buy a big paper roll in a home improvement store. The thickness of the paper is up to you, what matters is that you can work with it! To get the curves right, I use French curve rulers.

4. Cut out the pattern

Don’t be chocked if you think it looks big!

5. Transfer pattern to latex sheeting

latex leggings patternPlace your pattern on the latex sheeting and draw around it. The leggings consist of 4 parts, a front and a back side for each leg! Take the front side, put it on the latex, draw around it, then flip the pattern once over and draw around it. Now you got the two front sides on the latex sheeting. Do the same with the backside. I used a silver paint marker.

6. Cut and clean latex

latex pattern cut out

Cut the latex sheeting out and clean it from the paint marker by using the mineral spirit and a piece of cloth. If your latex sheeting got to much talcum powder on from the production process, then I recommend you to rinse it off with water or take a wet piece of cloth to wipe it off. (To make sure while you work with your latex sheeting that there wont be talcum powder on your fresh applied glue, because as soon as you touch the latex sheeting with the talcum powder on, you will have it on your fingers and easily transfer it to the glue on the seam while you work with it).

Tips to remember:

  • Give the latex a few minutes to straighten itself out again, after you applied the glue.
  • Do not stretch the latex, pull anywhere to make it work, but never stretch the parts you are just about to glue together. A little practice will help. ;)
  • Keep your workspace clean to avoid left over glue sticking to the latex leggings.
  • Have some small weights around to help you hold the pattern parts separated and under control.

7. Glue the seams

glue outer seam

Start out with the outer seams on the leggings! Take the front and backside of one leg. Watch out that you take the right parts, it is a mess to get the glue off again if you applied it once! So check carefully for the shiny and rough sides on the latex sheeting and put them together the right way.

Now use the mineral spirit to clean your seam from all particles remaining! Apply the glue on both seams, the front and the backside pattern.

glue latex leggingsTo get that right, you apply the glue for the front side on the rough side of the latex sheeting and on the backside you apply the glue on the shiny side, so that you glue in the end the front side on top of the backside seam.

You should start gluing from the waist down to the ankle, so that you can cut over standing parts off after you are done gluing! If you got your seam together use your seam roller and apply pressure to the seam by rolling over it! Do the same with the outside of the other leg!

This is how your leggings should look like by now.

8. Glue the crotch together

Ok, this might be a little difficult for some of you, because of the curve. But I am sure with some patient you will manage it!

You will now glue the crotch of the front sides together! Again clean your seam and apply the glue on the crotch of both legs.

Here you will not start out on the waistline, start by the other end where the deepest curve is, so that in case you have to cut something of in the end, you will cut it of on the waistline.

Do the same with the crotch in the back.

9. Glue inner legs

Now you are almost there, just the inner sides of the legs are missing! Start out by placing your leggings so on your workspace that they are wide spread, which will make it easy to clean them and apply the glue afterwards without moving them around.
I apply the glue on one entire leg and approx. 10-15cm on the other leg. After the latex straighten itself out again, start by gluing the middle of the crutch together and then go down the leg where there is glue on all the way.

That the other leg, where I don’t have glue on all the way, is not sticking together, I will put a little weight or just my rotary cutter in between to avoid it.

After I glued on leg together I will do the rest of the other one. The reason why I apply those 10-15cm of glue on the second leg and then put something in between is that it is then easier for me to apply afterwards glue on the rest of the second leg. It gives me a nice point to start out with applying the rest of the glue.

10. Waistband

You will need a 4 cm (1.6″) wide band with the length of your leggings waistline.
The band should be thicker then latex sheeting you used for your leggings, so that it will be able to keep your leggings up when you wear them. I used 0.6 mm latex sheeting for the waistband.
Now when you glue the waistband on the leggings, you will start on the middle seam in the back of your
latex leggings and will also end there. You glue the waistband of the leggings on the outside of the leggings, not on the inside.

If you are uncertain if your leggings will be to high up the waist after you will have glued the waistband on, then just carefully try the leggings on before you glue the waistband on. Use some talcum powder to get easier in.

11. Reinforcements

You will glue reinforcements on those points where there will be the most stress, that would be on the seams in the crutch and the ankles.

Now you should be done!

If necessary clean the leggings, shine them and dress up!

If you have questions, suggestions etc. just leave a comment underneath the post and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Let me know how your project went or if you tried this tutorial and liked it, then please send me a photo of you wearing the latex leggings, so I can post them here. I’m looking forward to hear from you!

Wendy bookmarked your page in a completely new file called “JIM LOOK AT THIS!!” She didn’t add enough exclamation points. This is wonderful. For a long time we have been wanting to try to make our own garments and you have given us the courage to try. Wendy has patience and I am not to bad with a tape measure and geometry.

Thanks for all the effort you have put into your page and looking forward to receiving updates.

This is a really amazing project and I hope, you will go on with it. Actually the first one since the old “Rubber Hans” http://www.geocities.com/rubberhans/ which ich shareing the knowledge. Techniques doing latex clothes are often kept a secret and seen as voodoo magic.

Regarding the example on how to make your own leggings, there is ONE problem. How to get from the measurements to the pattern, unless you are an educated designer or tailor? Unfortunetly, this step is missing.

I just took a look at some leggings, I own. They are constructed of TWO parts, only. So they do not have an outer leg seam. What is the benefit of doing it with four parts?

    regards,

    QM

Apart from repairing and slightly modifying rubber outfits, I never made anything by myself. I have just bought the book “making latex clothes” (which is just a startener) and I appreciate your website. Some interesting topix and ideas. And who knows, maybe I’ll have a try one day or another.
Thanks for your infos and ideas.

    Hi Kitty !

Thank you so much for this wonderful information. Your short videos on the construction of the garments are brilliant.

I’ve got the Making Latex Clothes book too, but it’s like a cook book – you know what things SHOULD look like, but the bits in between can be a bit of a mystery at times !

Keep up the good work :o )

hi kitty, appreciate your website. one question is -since pattern making is way beyond my skill- where to put the measurements on the pattern, onto the curved lines or onto the straight lines? thanks for your kind help.

I run a fetish site and am trying desperatly to make my own latex clothing.

I have emailed you Kitty, with some questions. Idid buy a book- on making latex clothing but its no good to me – so i sent it back. i need proper patterns and step by step diagrams. The book just gave names of adhering latex with glue, phrases for cutting and then pretty pictures of ladies in latex outfits. Its not very good- i dont recommend it unless your a dress maker.

I would happily like to see some simple patterns to use on latex sheets.
otherwise its very difficult to gadge whats what.

I hve to make clothing for my fans to- and i cant obviousy meet them and measure them. i have to go by their measurements.
Id like to learn more….and miss Kitty is the best

  22. Jess Fink Says:

    Hey, this is great!
    I have a question,
how do you shine your latex? I just started getting into it and I just can’t seem to find a straight answer. It seems like I should be able to buy something from the auto store or the super market to shine it and not have to buy the official tiny shine bottles online, but I have no idea what that could be!

  23. Doctress Julia Says:

Oh, I’m too messy to ever make these right…. can you make me some? :>

  24. MissCharlotte Says:

Great work Latex Kitty!! I make my own latex items, but I find/found it hard to find out how you make stuff, everyone keeps it secret

For making the pattern of the legging I found an interesting webtool that might make this step much easier for many. A pattern generator!! You can find it at: http://www.patternschool.com/ under “Lazy People Stuff”, just enter your measurements, and out comes your pattern!! (I haven’t tried it yet, I must admit … )

You’re a genius Kitty. Maybe some tips on how to shine, as i can never get a shine as perfect as yours!

  29. Latex Kitty Says:

    Hi.
The shine on pictures appears sometimes stronger, especially if you take pictures with a flashlight.
If you shine moulded latex it wont be as shiny as glued latex. Reason, the colors are not the same, they dont contain the same amount of pigments and reflect light not as good.
Best example is a moulded black T-shirt, which is more likely to be a dark grey then a strong black.
Of course there are also some products like a few good and shiny moulded gloves which are great in color.
    How I shine:
Well, I have something called latex polish. What you put on a sponge and then massage into the latex. Gives a nice shine, but its not super shiny.
If I want it to be super shiny then I use the waterbases silicone oil. Like the dressing aid from Pjur or the bodyglide.
Just apply it with your hand on the latex. Done! SHINY!

  30. Gearhed Says:

I am new to this, and was wondering if there is any differance in the crotch area between men & women?

  31. Latex Kitty Says:

Yes there is if you make tight fitting clothing like leggings or underwear. Men obviously need more space. That means you need to glue in an extra piece to create that space. I will make a tutorial on mens underwear, there you will see what to do. :)

  32. Gearhed Says:

Appreciate the quick response and info.

  33. chelsea walker Says:

i really love those leggings, but i suck at making anything, is there a way u could make me some !!!!!

  34. Latex Kitty Says:

    Thank you.
Ahhh you just need some patience and practice :)
But I dont do it for sale, there are so many stores offering that.

  35. chelsea walker Says:

ok my bf and i are thinking of trying this, if he doesn’t have extra space but like “tucks” everything in, will it be comfortable

  36. Gia Gloveliczyk Says:

Also did this tutorial with mixed results but still a big smile on my face just for the fact of actually completing something so seemingly complicated. Despite almost breaking down and crying after I split my leggings the first time in construction and then almost banging my head against a wall the second time they split when trying them on for fit, I am happy. Despite those two major incidents I would have been able to complete the leggings in approx. six hours. Not too bad.

Anyway, the one problem I had I think is a result of my pattern. I followed your guide and the fit is perfect but for some reason the ‘front’ pieces (of the four pieces of the garment) curve evenly towards the inseam and the back pieces curve towards the outer seams. It does look pretty cool and the leggings are still comfortable but wondering what you can suggest might be the problem. On my pattern the pieces certainly seem straight similar to your design.

Thank you in advance for your response.

This site is great! I am currently purchasing the tools to create my own latex for my wife and myself and would like to know how to create patterns from our measurements. I would also like to know how to add extra crotch area for myself. I am glad I found your site, it has given me a lot of answers and ideas. Thanks Latex Kitty!

  42. Kisu Says:

These really are too great. I’ve always wanted to own some latex pants and maybe a cute tight little dress but the outfits are always so expensive online. You have definitely inspired me to give these a try!

  43. Donna Says:

The instructions etc are great but I wish that people would stop refering to the numerous images of stars and fashionisters wearing streach pvc, “zentai” and cire leggings as “latex leggings” as 95% of those images are not latex!! Close inspection should show that to people who actually wear latex…
Having said that, yes real latex leggings look great and well done in showing how to make your own…
And as small note yes I make latex clothing.. I sell to personal clients plus a shop called reactor rubber in Australia (I make the kilts, teady bears, full figure bras and 4 strap cincher top…)

So just that I get this right – which side is the outside in the end? The shiny or the rough one? I am pretty easy to confuse, sorry x)
    Thanks in advance.

  46. Latex Kitty Says:

@Dustball: The shiny should be on the outside.
But in the end its all up to yourself.

  47. Pele Says:

I noticed that on the pattern above it says you reduced the size by 8% to keep the leggings tight, just wondering where I could find out information on stretch percentage for other thicknesses of latex?

  48. Latex Kitty Says:

    @ Pele
there is actually no such chart. But some basics are: Thin latex is good for really tight things and things you want to stretch.
Thick latex is not the best choice for really tight things ( I talk about a gauge of 0.50mm and higher), it is just not as soft body hugging as latex with a gauge of 0.30mm.
Example: If I try to make my leggings out of 0.4 or 0.5 then I should forget about trying to stretch the material like that. It would pinch me in the knees and probably cut of my blood circulation.

  52. Matjax Says:

Hello Latexkitty. I love what you have done here! It’s awsome! But what I was wondering was, when I took a look at your picture I noticed you have managed to pull the latex leggings 100% tight in the crotch, even behind. Is that because of how you made the leggings, or what method do you use to put them on? I think the leggings look so much better when they are all the way up, giving no air-space in the crotch.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for this brilliant pattern!
